Safari’s Reader Simplifies Website Reading

Reader Button

Safari's Reader feature takes a web page article and removes surrounding ads and other visual distractions, presenting a clean, uncluttered version of the full length of the article.

Click on an article on a website, then click the READER button that appears to the right of the URL in the address bar, and Safari will present the current article on a plain white background, much easier to read. You can also launch the Reader with a keyboard shortcut (Command-Shift-R). To leave the Reader, click the READER button again or press the "esc" key on your keyboard.

It’s easy to print the article in the Reader view. Just press Command-P and click the Print button. This way, your printout will contain only the article, not an entire website.

Start the New Year with Extra Cash!

Extra Cash

In a recent Email/Internet class, a Mac Club Member found $856 in an old bank account on the Unclaimed Property website. You, too, may be one of millions of Californians owed money by the State!

The most common types of Unclaimed Property are:

  1. Old checking and savings accounts.
  2. Safe deposit box contents.
  3. Stocks, mutual funds, bonds, and dividends.
  4. Un-cashed cashier's checks or money orders.
  5. Certificates of deposit.
  6. Matured or terminated insurance policies.
  7. Estates.
  8. Mineral interests and royalty payments, trust funds, and escrow accounts.

You can check the Unclaimed Property website yourself:

  1. Go to http://www.sco.ca.gov/upd.htmlu>
  2. In the left margin, under the green header "ONLINE CLAIM SERVICES," click on "Start Your Search" (under Online Claim Services).
  3. Enter your last name, first name, and middle initial (optional). Try different variations.
  4. Entering a city is not necessary and sometimes more inclusive.
  5. Click the Search button.
  6. In the list of Search Results, click on the blue ID Number to see details.

P. S. Out of curiosity, I entered some Mac Club members’ names at random and found unclaimed property waiting in their name. It might be you. Why not check it out? Happy New Year!

Having Trouble Connecting To Your Scanner?

Try Preview to connect to your scanner (Preview in Snow Leopard and Lion supports scanning).

Preview logo
(Preview application icon.)

Follow these easy steps:

  1. Place the document/picture to be scanned on the glass of your scanner (upside down).

  2. Open the application Preview (If its not in your Dock, look for it in your Applications folder).

  3. From the File menu, select Import from Scanner, and from the submenu, select your scanner. In my case, this is CanoScan LIDE 90 (see image below).

  4. A scan window appears.

  5. Click the Scan button.

In the Show Details panel, you can name the scanned image, set the resolution, the file format, the scan destination, etc.
