   Date & Time Stamping

It has always been a helpful reference for me to have the documents I print include the date the document was printed. And since I have been a longtime user of the Apple StyleWriter 1200 printer it has been a convenient feature to go to Page Setup (File menu) and set it to show the Date in the Footer Right corner of documents to be printed.

I should mention, however, that the above opportunity will only appear in the Page Setup dialog box when you are connected to the Internet. If you are in the Finder, and then open the Page Setup dialog box you will notice the Date imprint settings are not available. (Note: Your model of printer may, or may not, offer these options.)

So, to solve this shortcoming I devised the following scheme (these instructions are based on using AppleWorks 5... will also work in AW6 but items may be found in other menus):

Open a new Drawing document. Select Show Rulers (Window menu), rulers will help guide you for positioning. Next, click on the Text tool, cursor becomes an I-beam, then draw a small rectangle frame, release your mouse button. The flashing insertion point appears, ready for your text entry.

Go to Edit menu, select Insert Date, current date then appears on screen at insertion point. Put in a couple word spaces then select Insert Time. A single click will now deactivate the type setting mode and activate the date line as a selected object. This object can now be dragged to the lower right corner of your 8 1/2 x 11 sheet, and will always be there as you use this "form" over and over again.

To finish the process... go to File menu, select Save As, when dialog box appears give the file the name date&time, store it on the Desktop, and click on Save.

Now, this is how you can use it... say you visit yahoo finance to get quotes on your Portfolio. When you bring up the page it is filled with all kinds of information. Because it is smart to avoid wasting ink, you have decided to print only the small area containing your quotes.

Press and hold down  Command  shift  4, cursor becomes a crosshair. Drag to make a frame around the cropped object, keeping mouse button down, hold down control key, then release button. The object has now copied to the clipboard.

Go to the Desktop, double click on date&time icon, window opens, select Paste (Edit menu), object appears in work area of window, position it as you want... then Print.

Each time you want to paste new copy into this form simply delete the previous and paste in the new... then Print. A new and current date&time will always automatically be printed.
